Does an art work mean whatever viewers think? What if viewer’s have incompatible interpretations?

Roland Barthes wrote of the Birth of the Viewer. Modern theorists and critics speak of the Creative Eye. If meaning is in the eye of the beholder – hermeneutical pluralism, what if these interpretations are incompatible? Moreover, if as a viewer my interpretation includes the idea that only my understanding is valid, how can my opinion be free if it rejects everyone else’s?
